By default, your PC installs all applications to the succeeding location. C:\Program Files\WindowsApps (C is your Windows installation drive). But if the drive is running out of memory you might want to change the installation directory and direct all other installations in an external or partitioned drive .
We are going to use a registry hack to change the installation directory so be sure to back up your registry before performing any of the below steps . Useful when something goes wrong
Note : To use the Registry Editor you need to have the Administrator or Power User Privilage
How To Change the installation Directory in Window 8
1. Go to Start Button and type registry on the search box
2. After Registry Editor Window Open Navigate to the following directory
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE >> SOFTWARE >> Microsoft >> Windows >> CurrentVersion >> Appx
3. Then Right click > Permissions of the Appx key
4. Click Change, next to where TrustedInstaller
5. Then on the Permission for Appx windows Click Add and Select your Username and make sure the permisions are set to Full control . Apply and then Click OK
6. Click on Appx Key and on the RHS right click on PackageRoot and select Modify
7. A window will open showing having a Value Data as the path of the Installation Directory . Now Change the Directory to whatever location you want your programs to be installed . As shows below I changed mine to Drive D on WindowsMetroApp directory
How To Change the installation Directory in Window 7
1. Open Registry Editor as Instructed Above
2. Then Navigate to the below key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE >> SOFTWARE >> Microsoft >> Windows >> CurrentVersion
3. Click on the CurrentVersion and on the RHS look for ProgramFilesDir Key.
Right click on ProgramFilesDir and Select Modify.
4. You can now enter the path of the installation directory instead of the defaulted path written there.
